Some Short Game Secrets

By - Posted Dec 6, 2012

The underhanded approach; hitting a short pitch shot with exactly the right force for the intended trajectory and distance is a technique that can only be learned by experience.  However, a useful drill is imagining throwing a golf ball underhanded with your right hand, to a spot short of the flag, before you actually play the shot.  Then simply try to reproduce the weight and feel of the action with the wedge in your hands.

Increasing Backspin

By - Posted Nov 29, 2012

At address, encourage an exaggerated upright swing plane by playing the ball back of the midway point in your stance. Also, set up very, very open. Next, weaken your hold on the club by moving both hands to your so that ‘V’s point toward your chin instead of midway between your chin and right shoulder. After checking that the clubface is square to your target, squeeze the handle a trifle more firmly with your left hand.

Keep Your Chin Up

By - Posted Nov 22, 2012

A steady head is critical to hitting short-irons accurately, but the typical high-handicapper often overdoes the ‘head-down’ advice, principally by dropping his chin too low at address.  This prevents the left shoulder from freely rotating under the chin on the backswing, and the right shoulder from doing the same on the downswing, which distorts the swing path, which produces off-target hits.

Controlling the Clubhead Path

By - Posted Nov 15, 2012

The clubshaft’s position at the top of the backswing generally indicates the direction in which the ball will start.  If the shaft points left of the target in what is known as the ‘laid-off’ position, you will most likely deliver the club head from out-to-in across the target line and start the ball left (curving it does will be the result of the interaction of the clubface alignment with the out-to-in swing path).

Keys to a Good Takeaway

By - Posted Nov 8, 2012

If you’ve developed the ad habit of yanking the club drastically inside the target line, or lifting it up abruptly at the start of your takeaway, or both, visualize a tee planted in the ground about 18 inches directly behind the ball on an imagined rearward extension of your target line,  Then try to brush the tee away with the  club head as you swing back.
