The Mustache and the Sony Open in Hawaii

Did you see Johnson Wagner this weekend at Wailea Country Club in Honolulu for the Sony Open? Fresh off a top 10 finish the previous weekend at the Tournament of Champions in Maui, he took the lead on Sunday at #10, and cruised to the finish with the win! But the real story is that new mustache – never seen before this venture in Hawaii.

Everyone is asking him if it gave an “extra edge” with his game after such a strong start in the first two events – a top ten and a win! In addition, did the mustache give him the confidence to say several weeks ago that he will come out strong this season, and expects to do very well early in the season.

If you look around the PGA Tour, there is very little facial hair. So will this start a trend?? “Grow a mustache and improve your game.” Will we see more players now “pop-up” with mustaches or other facial options? Well, I guess we will see – my thought is YES – we will see more “hair above the lip”, and maybe other varieties…………And what nicknames are likely to develop over the next few weeks for the “Wagner stache.”……Let’s keep our eye on this one. Players (in all sports) do some pretty strange things to get an edge!
