Yes, it almost always sounds easy when the pros describe how they putt or hit the ball. They are a different breed from the rest of us, but nevertheless, many of things they do to best execute a shot, we can actually do or at least try.
So, you have that big breaker, and it’s at a medium to long distance – what do many pros do?
- One thing they do is to look at it from the low side.
- If the putt breaks from left to right, go to the approx. middle of the distance on the right side of the putt – the low side. Looking at from the low side gets your eyes closer to the ground while still standing, and seeing the entire length of the putt.
- From that position, start to try and read the putt in 1/3rds. Do it from the cup to the ball, and then in the other direction. Be sure and pick your little spots where you think each 1/3 point is.
- Go back behind the ball, and zero in on those points. Make any adjustments to your 1/3 points now that you are directly behind it.
Most of the time, we are just trying to two putt these scary sweepers. And, there is no doubt that taking a little more time to get ready for this type of putt is needed. Think like the pros and see if this can produce a little better result for you.
