So, the big question is how much difference does a caddie make for a tour player? Steve Williams was a caddie initially for Ray Floyd who won several majors, and then Greg Norman who was #1 for more than a handful of years, and won two majors. We all know he was with Tiger for all but one of his majors…And now for the first time in several years Adam Scott gets a win on the PGA tour – a big win at that. We all know Steve is good at what he does.
I say a caddie can hurt more than he can help. The pro has to physically swing the club, make the delicate chip, initiate the perfect stroke for a putt to go in, etc. Caddies get paid 10% of the pro’s winnings; doesn’t that sort of tell us their value? The caddie can carry the bag perfectly, be on time and where he needs to be, can hand the pro the right club, give him a good read on the green, etc., but he doesn’t hit the shot………In my opinion, Steve Williams was very inappropriate with his comments after Adam won yesterday. He better be careful not to distract Adam, or he will again be looking for a bag to carry….Adam won because he pulled off great shot after great shot over the weekend.
